Black Widow: Disney investor wants Marvel tentpole to premiere on Disney+

Gone are the days of big budget studio theatrical releases (at least, for now). As the world works to adapt to pandemic life, movie theater business has taken a back seat. However, streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime do not seem to be hurting much at all as they’ve been offering an abundance of high profile films that would have surely bucked the ol’ box office. Disney has been a bit more cautious with the amount of big time films they release straight to their streaming service, Disney+, finally deciding last month to send their live-action MULAN there after pushing its theatrical release back many times. With other tentpole movies, such as BLACK WIDOW, still in release date limbo, Disney investor, Dan Loeb, believes it is time for the Mouse House to start going the way of the stream. Here’s what he had to say:

“My understanding is that the old-line executives don’t want to go over the top with their big tentpole movies, which is why they announced they were pushing ‘Black Widow’ and other movies to 2021. I don’t think they appreciate the tiger they have by the tail, which is to say the value they can drive by moving into a subscription model, which has been adopted by everyone from Microsoft to Amazon. It’s so value accretive. What Netflix has is this immense subscriber base that allows it to invest in an enormous amount of content and amortize that to get more subscribers. Disney isn’t there yet, but they need to get there as quickly as possible. If they don’t get critical mass in their subscriber base, they will be permanently disadvantaged versus Netflix.”

Dude makes pretty good sense to me. Basically, when COVID hands you lemons, turn it into lemonade! You know many people want to see BLACK WIDOW, so quit whining about theaters being closed and release it another way! What do you guys think? I’m very interested to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
